Singles Sweep Keys Win Over Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific reeled off 3 straight 6-0, 6-0 wins to open singles play and clinch a win over No. 18-ranked Westmont Tuesday afternoon at the Abbott Tennis Courts in Santa Barbara.

The Cougars took 2 of 3 doubles matches, and senior Jessalyn Lau, sophomore Emily Ignas and junior Marie Tanaka registered perfect straight-set wins to clinch the team win. Juniors Sheryl Bon and Casey Wetzig each surrendered just 2 total games in straight-set wins, and sophomore Leah Hoffee closed out the match with a 3-set No. 2 singles victory.

Wetzig and Hoffee, who are the only Cougars with 10-plus individual singles victories this season, teamed up to reach 10 wins in doubles play with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. The duo is now 10-3 in doubles this year, playing exclusively at the No. 2 position. Wetzig's win at No. 4 singles later in the day ran her individual singles winning streak to 10 matches, while Hoffee's individual singles record was boosted to 11-3 with her 4-6, 7-6, 10-6 win at the No. 2 position.

Bon and freshman Sarita Adhikary suffered just their second doubles defeat together this year, dropping the No. 1 doubles matchup to Westmont's Ilissa Mathews and Cassie Strange by an 8-5 margin. Bon and Adhikary fought off a total of 9 match points and rallied to win 3 straight games after falling into an early 7-2 deficit.

Lau and Tanaka teamed up in doubles for just the second time due to the absence of lineup regular Natalie McNall, posting an 8-0 win at the No. 3 spot to give the Cougars the first team point of the dual match.

With the win, Azusa Pacific sweeps the season series with Westmont and maintains its hold on fourth place in the GSAC standings, improving to 11-4 overall and 7-4 GSAC. The Warriors drop to 4-11 overall and 4-7 GSAC.

The Cougars now have a 10-day break from competition, its longest layoff in-season, before hosting the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Vanguard on Friday, April 9, in a key conference matchup.
