AZUSA, Calif. -- Three players were perfect in straight-sets singles victories for the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Azusa Pacific, which posted an 8-1 win over No. 15-ranked Westmont Tuesday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

In order to accommodate the men's and women's tennis GSAC doubleheader, the women's match began with the 6-match singles slate, and the Cougars started with 6-0, 6-0 victories from the bottom half of the singles lineup to take an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Emily Ignas improved to 3-0 in singles play on the year with the shutout at No. 4, junior Casey Wetzig won by the same score at No. 5, and junior Marie Tanaka followed suit with a perfect straight-sets win at No. 6.

Ilissa Mathews trimmed the Cougars' lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, but Azusa Pacific determined the match outcome with wins in the remaining 2 matchups at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Sophomore Leah Hoffee held off a second-set charge from Tara Yekrang at No. 3, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win, and junior Sheryl Bon clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the top spot.

In doubles, the Cougars won by a combined 24-2 margin, surrendering single games at No. 1 and 2 doubles to go with another perfect result (8-0) from Ignas and senior Jessalyn Lau at the No. 3 position. The quick doubles results finished off the match in a total time of just 2 hours, 24 minutes.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 3-1 overall, 2-1 GSAC, while Westmont drops to 1-4 overall, 1-2 GSAC. The Cougars are back in action for difficult back-to-back conference matchups on the road, taking on No. 7-ranked Vanguard in Costa Mesa on Friday, Feb. 26, before visiting No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific on Wednesday, March 3.
