Cougars Impressive in Shutout

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Senior John Kightlinger scored a pair of second half goals just minutes apart to give the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Azusa Pacific a 2-0 nonconference win over NAIA-member Walsh (Ohio) in the opening game of the Heritage Club Classic at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

After a scoreless first half, Kighlinger collected a Jason Van Broekhuizen chip and buried it into the net just 8 minutes into the half to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  Just 6 minutes later, Van Broekhuizen fed Jeff Johnson who crossed the ball into the box to a waiting Kightlinger.  Again Kightlinger found the back of the net, and the Cougars had a 2-0 lead.

Freshman GK Morgan Cathey was rarely tested and needed to make just one save to post his third straight shutout to start the season.  Cathey becomes the first Cougar keeper to post 3 consecutive shutouts to start the season.  The Cougars outshot Walsh, 14-4.

Azusa Pacific, now 2-0-1 on the season, plays the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Baker (Kan.) tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
