Biola Ends Cougar Season

LA MIRADA, CALIF. – Crystal Roberts' 1-out home run to left field in the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie and lifted the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Biola to a 2-0 victory over Azusa Pacific in the second round of the NAIA Region 2 Softball Playoffs.  The loss ends the Cougars' season.

All-GSAC pitchers Mandy Dorow of Azusa Pacific and Jessica Logsdon of Biola went toe-to-toe for five-and-a-half innings until Roberts' bomb finally gave an advantage to Biola.  Dorow had allowed just 3 runners to reach second base through 5 innings and had just retired 7 of 8 Eagle batters.

Meanwhile, Logsdon retired the Cougar leadoff batter in every inning and was able to avoid disaster in 3 different innings.  With 2 outs and 2 on in the first inning, Logsdon got All-GSAC shortstop Jennie Waleszonia to pop out to short.  In the third inning, Logsdon struck out All-GSAC outfielder and Azusa Pacific's all-time home run leader Lorna Lyttle with 2 on and 2 outs again.  In the fifth, Logsdon got catcher Jaime Salazar to line out to center field with 2 outs with Cassie Lakey at second base.

The loss ends Azusa Pacific's season at 40-18.  Dorow closes her senior campaign with a 25-8 record and with a school season-record 14 shutouts.
