Pitching Takes Center Stage in Split

AZUSA, CALIF. -- In a battle between 2 of the nation's best small college programs, pitchers took center stage and basked in the limelight.
 
Azusa Pacific All-American Mandy Dorow fired 8 innings of shutout softball to lead the Cougars to 1-0 victory in the opener before Roadrunner hurler Erin Kelly responded with a 1-hitter to pace CS Bakersfield to a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
 
In the first game, Azusa Pacific took advantage of an Adrian Cisneros 1-out error on a Jennifer Powell attempted sacrifice bunt, a miscue that allowed pinch-runner Holly Downard to advance third base.  The next batter, pinch-hitter Kelly Thiederman, dribbled a grounder just past Cernero's out-stretched arms at second base to send Downard home with the game-winning run.
 
Thiederman's single was only the third hit allowed by Roadrunner pitcher Melanie Wood, but it was enough to offset Wood's 11- strikeout performance and drop her record to 6-3. Meanwhile, Dorow, who struck out 2 and retired the final 10 Roadrunners she faced, improved to 5-0.
 
In the second game, Kelly made sure Bakersfield would not be undone by a single run.Ê She shut down the Cougars, limiting them to just 4 base runners the entire game while retiring 17 of the final 18 batters.  Kelly struck out 8 to even her record at 4-4.
 
Jackie Goodin's 2-out single in the fourth-inning scored Cisneros from second base to put the Roadrunners up 1-0. Katie King's 2-out double in the fifth plated Wood and CSUB had more than enough, going up 2-0 at the time. They added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to complete their 12-hit attack.
 
With the split, Azusa Pacific's record moves to 12-5 while CS Bakersfield is 12-8.
