IRVINE, Calif. - Azusa Pacific's run through the PacWest Championships came to an end on Friday afternoon, as Concordia used a pair of big innings to pull away in a 12-5 win and claim the tournament title at Golden Eagles Field. The Cougars, who entered as the No. 3 seed, now await Monday's NCAA Selection Show to see if their season will continue with an at-large berth.
Despite the loss, sophomore left fielder
Julia Doan was named the PacWest Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, leading all hitters with four home runs and a .571 batting average across the week's games. Doan added to that resume in the final with a two-run homer in the first inning and an RBI single in the second, accounting for three of APU's five runs on the day.
The Cougars jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first when Doan followed a
Sommer Quinones leadoff single with her fourth home run of the tournament. After Concordia responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, APU cut it to 4-3 in the second thanks to Doan's RBI single scoring Quinones again. In the third,
Hailey Burns delivered a two-out, two-run double to regain the lead, 5-4.
But from there, Concordia took control. The Eagles scored seven unanswered runs between the third and fifth innings, fueled by timely hitting and a pair of two-run singles that opened up a 12-5 lead.
APU used five pitchers in the game, with
Ava Hernandez taking the loss. Offensively, Quinones went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Burns drove in two with a fifth-inning double. Doan finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk, capping off a standout postseason performance.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (31-22) entered the tournament ranked No. 10 in the NCAA West Region. With Concordia's title win earning the PacWest's automatic qualifier, APU must now hope to jump up at least two teams to secure one of the final at-large bids. The top eight teams in the region advance. The 2025 NCAA DivisionII Softball Selection Show will air Monday, May 5th at 10:00 AM ET (7:00 AM PST) on NCAA.com.
