AZUSA, CALIF. -- Junior Dan Wilson recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career to lead the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 3-0 victory over Graceland College in the opening round of the 14th Annual Cougar Classic Friday night.
Wilson converted a pair of second-half penalty kicks to ease the frustration of the Cougars, who clearly dominated the game yet had difficulty converting numerous scoring opportunities.
The Cougars led just 1-0 at the half after junior J.D. Rotteau converted a header from 2 yards out off a baseline crossing pass from Jeff Johnson. It was Rotteau's second goal in as many games this season.
The Cougars continually attacked the Yellowjacket net, yet it wasn't unitl Jacob Ward, who was trying to head a pass, was taken down in the box that Azusa Pacific finally tallied another goal on Wilson's first PK. Eight minutes later, a frustrated Yellowjacket committed another foul in the box, allowing Wilson to cap the game's scoring.
Azusa Pacific out-shot Graceland, 20-3, including a 10-0 clip in the second half. The Cougars had a whopping 11 corner kicks.
Azusa Pacific is 2-0 on the season while Graceland falls to 0-1.
In the Classic's other game, No. 18-ranked Westmont downed College of Notre Dame, 2-1, scoring a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes and then hanging on for the victory.
