Ademola's Late Equalizer Earns Cougar Draw

AZUSA, Calif. – Senior Leke Ademola scored his ninth goal of the season in the 81st minute as Azusa Pacific rallied for a 1-1 draw with Occidental Saturday night at Cougar Soccer Complex. The Cougars controlled extended stretches of the match and finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots, but needed Ademola's late strike to earn the result.

The result came less than 4 weeks after the Tigers handed Azusa Pacific a 2-0 defeat in the Cougars' season opener in Eagle Rock. In that Sept. 1 meeting, APU generated 19 shots and put seven on goal but was unable to beat Occidental goalkeeper Carlos Abram.
Saturday's rematch followed a somewhat similar script early, with Azusa Pacific producing much of the attacking pressure while Occidental kept the Cougars off the scoreboard.

APU mounted a sustained offensive push midway through the first half, producing 5 corner kicks and 3 shots during a stretch from the 25th through 37th minutes. Mario Shuteriqi put an attempt on target in the 35th minute, but Occidental goalkeeper Casey Scott made the save, and the teams went to halftime scoreless.

Occidental broke through at the 58:50 mark when Gianni Simamora scored his first goal of the season, putting the Tigers ahead 1-0.

The Cougars, however, continued to press.

Easton Jara nearly supplied the equalizer when his second-half shot struck the left post, but APU finally found the goal it needed with 9:49 remaining. Shuteriqi helped create the opportunity, feeding Ademola, who converted at 80:11 to pull the Cougars even at 1-1.
The goal was Ademola's team-leading ninth of the season, continuing a productive opening month for the Cougar forward, while Shuteriqi collected the assist.

Azusa Pacific appeared to take the lead and perhaps steal the victory in the 89th minute when Adeloma's baseline cross was one-timed by Shuteriqui into the back of the net.  However, the goal was waived off by offsides.

The draw moved Azusa Pacific to 4-3-2, while Occidental went to 3-2-2.

For the Cougars, Saturday represented measurable progress from the season opener. APU was shut out despite a 19-11 shooting advantage in the first meeting; 25 days later, the Cougars again generated more opportunities, but this time found a late answer through Ademola to earn the draw.

Azusa Pacific returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the Cougars travel to Claremont, Calif., to face Pomona-Pitzer.
