AZUSA, CALIF. – The NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific ran its current win streak to 11 with a sweep over Cal Baptist in a GSAC doubleheader, winning the first game 4-0 and the nightcap 9-2. With the win, the Cougars extended their lead over idle Point Loma in the conference standings to two games.
In the first game, Jodi Miller hurled a two-hitter, her 11th shutout of the season. The Cougar offense took advantage of 4 Cal Baptist errors, and needed just 3 hits to push 4 runs across the plate. Shannon Long led off the bottom of the fourth inning with the only extra-base hit of the game, a ground-rule double, and came around to score on Lorna Lyttle's sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
In the nightcap, the Cougars pounded out 14 hits and scored 7 of their 9 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Trailing 2-1 after 3 ½ innings, Azusa Pacific took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Lyttle led off the inning by reaching base on an error, Jennifer Stark's RBI double was the first of 4 consecutive hits, resulting in 3 runs to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead at the end of 4 innings.
The Cougars put together 4 consecutive hits to open the bottom of the fifth inning, as well. Jennifer Robison singled, and Lyttle hit a double to set up a 3-run blast from Laura Powers, her second HR of the season and her first in conference play. Stark picked up a single, and later scored on Jennie Waleszonia's RBI single to give the Cougars an 8-2 cushion after 5 innings.
Stark finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, while Waleszonia went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
With today's wins, Azusa Pacific improves to 13-3 in GSAC play, 36-9 overall (34-4 since Feb. 19), while Cal Baptist falls to 6-10 in the GSAC, 26-17 overall.
