AZUSA, CALIF. -- All-GSAC outfield Lorna Lyttle smacked 3 home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Azusa Pacific to a doubleheader sweep of Cal Lutheran, winning the first game 14-0 in 5 innnings and taking the second game by a 5-0 count.
In the first game, senior pitcher Jodi Miller came within 1 batter of a perfect game, but nonetheless got the 5-inning no-hitter. Miller retired the first 14 Regals in a row before Cal Lutheran's Jennifer Lemons reached base on an error by Cougar second baseman Cassie Lakey with 2 outs in the fifth inning. Lemons was eventually thrown out trying to steal second base to end the game. Miller struck out 3 and record third straight shutout. She pushed her record to 8-2, lowered her ERA to 0.68, and has not surrendered a run in her the 29.2 innings of work.
Lyttle provided all the offense Miller needed with a 3-run home run down to left field with 2 outs in the first inning. Lyttle launched another long ball, a 2-run shot, to cap a 7-run third inning which put the Cougars up 14-0 at the time.
In the nightcap, Lyttle broke open a tight game with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Azusa Pacific a 5-0 lead. On the day, Lyttle was 4-for-5 with 9 RBIs, 3 runs scored, a double and 3 home runs. She now leads the team with 5 home runs and 14 RBIs
Junior Alisa Arrigonia raised her batting average to .619 (13-for-21) on the season after going 5-for-6 in the 2 games with 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
Junior Mandy Dorow scattered 6 hits to record her second shutout of the season and improve to 3-4.
