RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- After losing the doubles point, Azusa Pacific rallied to down Cal Baptist, 5-2, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Riverside.
The Lancers lost No. 3 doubles, 8-0, but came back to take No. 1 and 2 doubles and win the doubles point, taking a 1-0 team advantage into singles play. Jimmy Sutami and David Erceg defeated Kavan Hahn and Ben Medina, 8-4, to seal the win.
The Cougars responded in singles play, however. Azusa Pacific won 5 out of the 6 singles matches to win the team match. Kavan Hahn and Latief Mohamed posted identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, to lead the Cougar charge.
Azusa Pacific overpowered the Lancers at the top, as Martin Dvoracek beat Manju Weerakoon, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Jussi Ala-Opas defeated Sutami, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific moves to 10-3 overall, 6-1 in the GSAC. The Cougars play Binhampton (NY) Monday afternoon at Industry Hills in a nonconference match.
