INDUSTRY, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 7 ranked Azusa Pacific opened its 1999 season in fine fashion, defeating US International University, 5-2, at Industry Hills Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Cougars rebounded to win 5 out of the 6 singles matches and the dual match.
Sophomore Nathan Goodman, making his debut in the line-up at No. 5 after playing solely doubles a year ago, won easily, 6-1, 6-1.
Azusa Pacific's new No. 1 player, Martin Dvolacek, a transfer from NCAA Div. I Oklahoma State, also won handily, 6-1, 6-4.
Azusa Pacific, now 1-0 on the year, opens Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday when it travels to Westmont at noon.
