Cougars Flex Their Muscle

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific looked every bit of its Top 10 ranking in posting a 93-61 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday night in Azusa.

Senior forward Jeremy DeVries tallied a game-high 20 points in just 22 minutes of play to lead the Cougars to their most lopsided victory over Fresno Pacific since a 51-point (107-56) verdict in 1967. T.J. Walker and Corey Smith each tallied 14 points, with Walker adding team-highs of 8 assists of 6 rebounds.

"We did a good job tonight of building on our lead instead of letting it get away," said DeVries. "Earlier in GSAC we let teams get back into the game, but the last 2 games we did a better job of putting teams away. Our outside shooting wasn't that great tonight, but we moved the ball well."

Reserve David Maxwell led Fresno Pacific with 11 points off the bench. Josh Snow added 10 points and a game-high 7 rebounds. However, the Sunbirds committed 23 turnovers to hinder their effort.

Azusa Pacific fell behind 9-5 in the first 5 minutes of the game. However, the Cougars responded with a 12-0 run in 3 minutes to assume a 17-9 lead. At the same time, Fresno Pacific went ice cold from everywhere on the floor. The Sunbirds made just 4 field goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half, thus explaining their 9-for-29 (31%) clip at intermission, which included an 0-for-6 mark at the 3-point arc. But life wasn't any better at the free throw line either, where Fresno Pacific missed 11 of 18 first half free throws. Toss in 13 Sunbird first half turnovers and the mathematics worked out to an Azusa Pacific 53-25 lead at the break.

"Defense is the key," said Cougar coach Bill Odell. "All our fast breaks and good looks were triggered by our defense. Fresno went with a small line-up tonight and we took advantage of the match-ups."

The win, which is Azusa Pacific's 13th straight over the Sunbirds. Azusa Pacific improves to 20-4 on the season, 5-1 in the GSAC. The Cougars have now posted 6 straight 20-win seasons, a program first since the 1969-74 campaigns. Fresno Pacific falls to 9-12 overall, 1-5 in the GSAC.
