AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 25-ranked Azusa Pacific scored the game's first 13 points in less than 4 minutes and went on to post an easy 106-52 nonconference victory over La Sierra University, Wednesday night in Azusa.
All 12 Cougars who played scored, and the Cougar bench out-scored La Sierra's reserves, 60-15.
Junior guard
Jason Boswell (Turlock, Calif./Turlock HS), who was coming off of back-to-back 20-point games (his first 20-point games ever in 3 years at Azusa Pacific) in a Seattle Tournament last weekend, continued his hot hand, tossing in 17 in 16 minutes of play, including 12 in the first 6 minutes of the game when he canned 4 straight treys and pushed the Cougar cushion to 21-6 at the 14:21 mark of the first half.
"In the past, I've stuggled starting strong, but I have confidence now and I'm starting faster than before," said Boswell. "In a game like this, we don't look past them, but we know we won't struggle against them. It gives us a chance to work on things and develop more confidence for other opponents."
Junior
Jeremy DeVries (Mt. Vernon,Wash./Mt. Vernon HS) added 13 points (8-for-8) at the line) and 3 assists. He collected a game-high 5 steals to give him 18 in just 4 games. Sophomore
Justin Leslie (Nuevo, Calif./Perris HS), making his first start of the season, tossed in 14 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Matt Reed (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS), playing in his first game since March of 1995 (knee injuries), recorded 9 points and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes of play.
"It feels real good to be back and with the team again because it's been such a long time," said Reed. "After hitting my first free throw, I felt real good, but I know I could have done better tonight. I have no concern about my knees and I'm feeling solid."
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 4-0 on the young season. The Cougars have now won 19 straight at home and overall, are 141-35 since 1993. La Sierra falls to 1-6.
