Drawing The Same Picture

Cougars play to another draw in the PNW

TACOMA, Wash. – For the second consecutive match, Azusa Pacific scored late to earn a draw, as Emily Cherry's first goal as a Cougar helped secure a 1-1 tie against Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.

Despite controlling much of the match, Azusa Pacific was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities until the 79th minute. The Cougars outshot the Lutes 17-1 and held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Ariana Rivera and Lauren Grissom led the attack with 4 shots apiece.

Pacific Lutheran made the most of its limited chances, in fact, it's only chance. Senior forward Kyleigh Archer recorded the Lutes' lone shot of the match and converted it into a goal in the 18th minute for the second goal of her 4-year PLU career.

The score remained unchanged for more than an hour before Cherry, a junior college transfer from nearby Citrus, broke through with her only shot of the game. Her equalizer not only earned the Cougars a point but also ended Pacific Lutheran's impressive home defensive streak. Cherry became the first opposing player to score on East Field in nearly a year, snapping a stretch of 8 matches and 689 consecutive scoreless minutes by visiting teams.

Azusa Pacific continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, preventing Pacific Lutheran from attempting a shot after halftime. The Cougars finished with a 17-1 edge in total shots and an 8-1 advantage in shots on target.

Following Thursday's 2-2 draw at Puget Sound, Azusa Pacific concludes its first regular-season trip to the Pacific Northwest since 2012 with a 2-0-2 overall record. The Cougars return to action Wednesday when they host Westcliff in the first meeting between the 2 programs. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
