Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

O What A Start

Couguars move to 6-0 without dropping a set.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific remained undefeated on the volleyball court in 2026, dispatching of visiting La Sierra and Caltech in straight sets Friday afternoon inside the Felix Event Center.

The Cougars controlled La Sierra match with an efficient .427 attack percentage. They  never trailed in the opening set, then erased a 5-2 deficit in the second with a decisive 16-4 surge. APU stayed in command throughout the third to finish the sweep. Jackie Winfield led the offense with 14 kills, while Sarah Wilson added 10 kills and 12 digs.

In the win over Caltech, the Cougars recorded their highest team hitting percentage that can be found in the archives, a scorching .500 for the match. The Cougars pulled away after a short feeling-out process in the first set, with Wilson providing 6 of the team's 19 kills in the first set.  But the wealth was spread around, with middle blockers Abby McGuyre and Victoria Miller each getting their first start of the season and contributing immediately.  McGuyre had half a dozen kills of her own in the opening frame, while Miller chipped in 3 kills and a pair of block assists over the course of the match.

The second set saw the Cougars step on the gas immediately, rattling off 16 of the first 21 points.  While the Cougars managed 12 kills in the set, they came on only 25 total attacks as they took advantage of multiple service aces and eight Caltech errors.

Somehow, Azusa Pacific found another gear to open the third set, as a set-opening run that included 4 Wilson kills and 4 Brooklyn Kostoff aces snowballed into an 11-0 lead.  Given the chance to let others get in on the action, Riley Klatt and Elayna Hess combined for a pair of blocks while Mimi Diggs lived up to her name with a pair of third-set digs to keep rallies alive and let the Cougars pull away.

Wilson led the attack with 15 kills, while McGuyre and Brinja Martin each had 7.  Libero Flora Sebestyen had 13 digs, while Kostoff ended up with 5 digs.  As a team, the Cougars had 45 kills against only 3 errors over 84 total attacks, which is how the team hitting percentage of .500 is derived.  That is the highest team percentage at least since Azusa Pacific joined the NCAA in 2012.

With the victory, the Cougars remain undefeated at 6-0, all without dropping a set this season.  In fact, the 18 consecutive set wins to open a season is second best in program history, trailing only the 2001 Cougars who opened their campaign with 19 straight set wins.  This year's set of Cougars will attempt to eclipse the season-opening standard in another doubleheader on Saturday, when they host Justice University (AZ) at 10 a.m., followed by Hope International at 2:30 p.m.
