AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars dropped the final 2 games of their Cornerstone Cup rivalry with Biola, in Saturday's doubleheader. APU was shut out 5-0 in Game 1 before losing Game 2 12-6.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 0, Biola 5
Biola broke through in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Azusa Pacific had a few chances offensively, collecting four hits in the game. Maddy Debs singled in the third, Bella Fraser recorded a pair of hits, and Alexus Corona added a single in the seventh, but the Cougars were unable to bring a run across.
Ava Hernandez kept APU within striking distance for much of the afternoon. The Cougar starter worked around early trouble and held Biola scoreless in five of her seven innings in the circle.
The Eagles added insurance in the seventh with 3 runs to extend the lead to 5-0.
Game 2: Azusa Pacific 6, Biola 12
Biola struck first with three runs in the opening inning to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
The Cougars answered in the second. Fraser doubled down the left field line, and later in the inning Jocelyn Guzman singled up the middle to bring home both Fraser and Debs, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Biola added two more in the second on a two-run single to center, then pushed another run across in the third to make it 6-2.
Azusa Pacific responded in the fourth with its biggest inning of the game. Julia Doan singled, Hailey Burns reached on a fielder's choice, and Hannah Tipton singled through the right side to drive in a run while also allowing two more to score on the play. After Corona walked, Bella Fraser delivered a two-run double to left center to tie the game at 6-6.
The Eagles broke the game open in the fifth, erupting for six runs to stretch the lead to 12-6.
Tipton paced the Cougars offensively with three hits and an RBI, while Fraser went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Guzman also drove in two for Azusa Pacific, and Doan, Reagan Kunkle and Sydney Juarez each added a hit.
Up Next: The Cougars are on the road as they face Cal State San Bernardino for a pair of makeup games that were rained out earlier in the season. First pitch of Game 1 on Wednesday is set for 12:00 p.m.
