AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific returns to the friendly confines of the Cougar Baseball Complex on Tuesday night for a key PacWest Conference matchup against Vanguard, looking to reset momentum before a pivotal weekend stretch.
The Cougars (14-18, 12-11 PacWest) sit sixth in the conference standings and remain firmly in the middle of the postseason race, while Vanguard (6-21, 3-18 PacWest) enters near the bottom of the standings searching for consistency. With just one game on the slate, both teams are expected to treat the contest with urgency as conference play intensifies.
Finding a Response
Azusa Pacific comes into the matchup after dropping three of four games to No. 5 Point Loma, including a Saturday doubleheader where pitching struggles proved costly. Across the series, the Cougars showed flashes offensively, launching multiple home runs and totaling double digit hits in several games, but were unable to contain the Sea Lions' explosive innings.
That recent stretch reflects a broader trend. APU's offense has been surging, particularly at home. The Cougars are hitting .280 as a team this season with 51 home runs, and have elevated that production even further over their last eight home games, batting .328 during that span.
However, run prevention remains the biggest question mark. Azusa Pacific owns a 7.52 team ERA on the season and has struggled to limit big innings, a factor that loomed large in the Point Loma series.
Familiar Foe
Tuesday's matchup marks the second meeting of the season between the two programs. The Cougars took the first contest on February 25 with a 5-2 victory, powered by early offense and a dominant bullpen effort that combined for 15 strikeouts.
Historically, Azusa Pacific has controlled the series, holding a 115-42 all time record against Vanguard and winning nine straight matchups dating back to 2012.
Vanguard enters after dropping three of four games to Concordia and has faced challenges on both sides of the ball. The Lions are hitting .261 as a team while allowing opponents to hit .266, and have surrendered 192 runs in 27 games this season.
Players to Watch
The Cougars' offensive surge has been fueled by a trio of standout bats:
Bryce Robinette (3B) is hitting .362 on the season and .429 over his last eight games, continuing to be one of the most consistent hitters in the lineup. He also enters the game just two hits shy of 50 in his APU career.
Isaiah Rios (OF) leads the team with 30 RBIs and is riding a seven game hit streak while hitting .385 with four home runs over his last eight games.
Noah Lane (OF) is batting .423 over his last eight contests and remains a table setter and extra base threat in the heart of the order.
On the Mound
With both teams preparing for four game conference series later in the week, Tuesday is expected to be a bullpen game. That could put added emphasis on depth arms and situational pitching, an area where APU will look for stability after recent struggles.
What to Watch
Tuesday's game presents a clear contrast, a surging offense against a pitching staff still searching for answers. If the Cougars can pair their recent offensive production with cleaner innings on the mound, they have an opportunity to regain momentum and strengthen their position in the PacWest standings.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Azusa.
