APU picks up 2 wins on Day 2 of West Coast Challenge, defeating Cal Poly Humboldt and Stanislaus State

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – Azusa Pacific swept its 2 games on Saturday, defeating Cal Poly Humboldt 16-9 in the early afternoon before topping Stanislaus State 6-4 in the nightcap at Rosetta Canyon.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 16, Cal Poly Humboldt 9

The Cougars jumped out early in the top of the first to set the tone. After Hailey Burns worked a leadoff walk and stole second, Julia Doan drove her in with a two-run home run to left, giving Azusa Pacific an early 2–0 advantage. Cal Poly Humboldt responded in the bottom half with a two-run homer of its own to even the score.

Humboldt briefly seized momentum in the third, plating three runs to take a 5-4 lead, but APU answered immediately. In the fourth, the Cougars put together a four-run frame highlighted by RBI hits from Rianna De La Barcena and Alexus Corona, along with a sacrifice fly from Doan, reclaiming the lead at 8-6.

Azusa Pacific continued to apply pressure in the fifth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting to score three more runs and extend the cushion. The Cougars then broke the game open in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Burns drew an RBI walk before Doan delivered a two-run single, and another run came across on a wild pitch to push the lead to 15–9.

APU added its final run in the seventh when freshman Abi Milton came off the bench and delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, capping the Cougars' 16-run outburst.

In the circle, Allie Reese earned the win in relief, steadying the game through the middle innings. Analise Reyes closed the door, working the final frames to secure the victory as Azusa Pacific held off a late Humboldt push.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 6, Stanislaus State 4

The Cougars wasted no time setting the tone, striking for three runs in the bottom of the first. After Burns worked a leadoff walk and Doan reached, Sydney Juarez delivered a clutch two-run single to left to put APU on the board. Juarez later came home on a sacrifice fly from Alexus Corona, giving Azusa Pacific an early 3–0 advantage.

APU added to the lead in the second inning behind a productive rally. Reagan Kunkle opened the frame with a single, and after a series of aggressive baserunning plays, Doan singled to center to drive in Burns. Juarez followed with another RBI single, pushing the lead to 5–0.

Stanislaus State answered in the third, plating two runs to cut the deficit to 5–2. The Cougars responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After an error and a single put runners on, Doan came through again with an RBI single through the left side, extending the margin to 6–2.

The Warriors continued to battle, scoring two runs in the sixth to make it a 6–4 game, but the Azusa Pacific bullpen held firm down the stretch. Analise Reyes entered in the seventh and worked a clean frame, striking out one to secure the save and seal the Cougars' seventh win of the season.

In the circle, Ava Hernandez earned the win after working five innings and striking out seven before Reyes closed the door.
