SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Azusa Pacific dropped a pair of close contests Friday night at the D2 West Coast Challenge, falling to No. 17 Cal State East Bay and CSU Monterey Bay in back-to-back games.
Game One – No. 17 Cal State East Bay 7, Azusa Pacific 6
The Cougars came out fast against the 17th-ranked Pioneers, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take early control. Hannah Tipton drove in the first run, and Celeste Camarena followed with a three-run home run as APU capitalized on defensive miscues to build a 5–0 lead.
Cal State East Bay chipped away throughout the middle innings before pulling even with a three-run sixth. The Pioneers then completed the comeback in the seventh on a two-run home run by Jasmyn Morales, edging the Cougars 7–6.
Julia Doan went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, while Tipton added two hits and an RBI. Camarena finished with three RBIs, and Hailey Burns scored twice. Ava Hernandez went the distance in the circle, striking out one and keeping APU within reach throughout the night.
Game Two – CSU Monterey Bay 13, Azusa Pacific 10
In the nightcap, Azusa Pacific battled back repeatedly but couldn't slow a late surge from CSU Monterey Bay in a 13–10 loss.
The Otters jumped out early, scoring seven runs over the first three innings. APU answered with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Maddy Debs, then surged ahead with five runs in the fifth as Julia Doan homered and the Cougars strung together timely hits to take an 8–7 lead.
CSU Monterey Bay responded decisively in the sixth, scoring six runs behind a three-run home run from Nevaeh Martinez to regain control. Azusa Pacific added runs in both the sixth and seventh, including an RBI triple from Doan, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Debs finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Doan went 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, and two RBIs. Tipton added two hits, and Alexus Corona drove in a run as the Cougars totaled 13 hits in the loss.
Azusa Pacific will look to regroup as the D2 West Coast Challenge continues this weekend.
