Cougars Bounce Back

PASADENA, Calif. – Seniors Jacey Loewen and Flora Sebestyen paced a balanced offensive attack as Azusa Pacific snapped a 2-match losing streak with a commanding 3-0 victory at  Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Braun Athletic Center. The Cougars improved to 21-2 overall with set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-10.

After dropping back-to-back matches earlier in the week, APU responded with one of its most efficient performances of the season. The Cougars hit .281 as a team, recording 43 kills against just 11 attack errors while holding Caltech to a .090 hitting percentage. APU also dominated defensively, leading the dig battle 60-51 and totaling 9 service aces.

The opening set featured 11 ties before the Cougars seized control late. With the score knotted at 18-18, APU closed the frame on a decisive 7-0 run. Freshman Allie Hertzler sparked the surge with a service ace, while junior Abby McGuyre delivered 3 kills during the stretch to help the Cougars pull away for a 25-18 victory.

APU carried that momentum into the second set. Although Caltech stayed within striking distance through the midpoint of the frame, the Cougars used a balanced attack behind Loewen and Sebestyen to gradually build separation. Consecutive kills from Sebestyen and Loewen helped APU open a late advantage before a service ace from Loewen and a kill by senior Brynja Martin capped a 25-19 win and a two-set lead.

The third set belonged entirely to the Cougars. Serving proved to be the difference as Sebestyen ignited a dominant run with 4 aces during a 6-0 Cougar run that resulted in an 9-1 cushion. APU never looked back, overwhelming the Beavers with a 15-5 run and closing out the match with a convincing 25-10 final set.

Loewen led all players with 11 kills while committing no attack errors, producing a stellar .688 hitting percentage. She added 2 block assists and 13 points. Sebestyen contributed 9 kills, a match-high 4 aces, 12 digs, and 14 points in an all-around effort. Senior Jenelle Loewen added 7 kills on a .385 hitting percentage, while Martin chipped in four kills and a block.

Caltech was led by Noelle Wilkinson's 6 kills, while Marissa Till added 4 kills and 12 digs. The Beavers fell to 5-13 overall.

The sweep gives the Cougars an encouraging bounce-back victory as they return home Tuesday (Oct. 20) to host Occidental at 6 p.m. in the Felix Event Center.
