DENVER, Colo. – The Cougars found the back of the net for the first time this season, but still suffered their second loss of the season, falling to Regis by a 3-1 final score Saturday afternoon. Osmin Carranza opened the Cougars' scoring accounts for 2025 in the defeat.
Regis opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a long ground pass creating a breakaway on the right edge of the box. The Cougars responded just a few minutes later. In the 34th minute, Aidan Draught found Carranza near the right sideline about 30 yards out from goal. The Freshman dribbled multiple times toward the top of the box and fired off a left-footed effort from 25 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced in to equalize.
The Rangers would regain the advantage on a quick counterattack in the 63rd minute. While the Cougars would have loved as many opportunities as they could get their hands on to tie the game up again, most of them were snuffed out by a red card forcing them to play the final 17 minutes a man down, followed by a Regis penalty kick in the 79th minutes to remove all doubt.
Inside the Numbers: Azusa Pacific was outshot for the game 14-6, though each team put 4 shots on target. Alexis Rodriguez went the full 90 in goal, making one save. Andrew Gomez put two shots on the net, the only Cougar besides Carranza to register multiple shot attempts. This was the second meeting all-time between the two schools, with Regis prevailing by a two-goal margin on both occasions.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (0-2) will continue its season-opening four-game road trip next Saturday when they head south to take on Cal State San Marcos. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
