Walter Finishes Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. – Just a day after a hard-fought win over Concordia, Azusa Pacific was back in action against Menlo, taking a more straight-forward path to victory this time in a 7-0 win over the Oaks on Wednesday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

Azusa Pacific only dropped one set in the entire match against Menlo, cruising to their third shutout victory in the last five matches. The Cougars won five of the six singles matches with five or less games lost in each win.

With the win, Azusa Pacific approves to 18-3, while Menlo drops to 5-6 on the season. The second set of PacWest rankings were released on Wednesday afternoon and the Cougars remain the No. 1, earning the inside track to the top seed at the PacWest Championships in Surprise, Arizona, on April 17-19.

Only one of the singles matches went to a third set and that was at No. 1 singles. Robin McAlpine came back in the second set to even the match. McAlpine broke early and then led 5-2 in the set, but Elias Emilio Walter broke back to even the set at 5-all before McAlpine broke again on set point. However, Walter polished off the sweep in the match tiebreaker, winning the match 6-2, 5-7, 10-4.

That ended a streak of 13-consecutive sets won for Walter, but his match winning streak is now at seven in a row. Walter now has 67 career singles wins, moving within one win of cracking the programs all-time top-10 list.

Joan Crespo needed exactly an hour to win his match, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Then Soeren Grandke picked up his 8th win in a row, winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Miha Velicki, no stranger to clinches matches, had the most dominant scoreline and the clinching win with his 6-0, 6-2 triumph.

The Cougars continued to pile it on with Brody Bohren getting back in the win column after his five-match win streak was snapped on Tuesday. He won 6-2, 6-2 for his third-most lopsided win of the year.

Max Schmidhauser set up Walter to complete the sweep with his 6-2, 6-3 win just a minute after Bohren won. Schmidhauser set a new personal record for wins in a single season, picking up his eighth victory of the 2025 campaign.

In doubles, David James Brownlee and Bohren continued what has been a hot streak for the Claremont duo. They won 6-2 for their fourth win in row. Crespo and Velicki then won at No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point with their 6-3 triumph. Since becoming a doubles team Crespo and Velicki have gone 7-2.

Azusa Pacific will be back on the courts of the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex to face Point Loma on Saturday in a match that will have big implications for seeding both in the PacWest Championships and the NCAA West Regional. Azusa Pacific won the first meeting between the two top-3 teams in the PacWest, 4-3. The rematch with the Sea Lions will begin at noon.
