LOS ANGELES – Azusa Pacific women's tennis will enter the PacWest Championships undefeated against teams in the PacWest, which officially does not have a conference regular season, winning 4-0 at Cal State LA on Thursday afternoon for the Cougars' 10th win in a row.
The Cougars locked down the No. 1 seed for the PacWest Championships with a straight-forward win over the Golden Eagles as
Karola Suviste,
Julia Jordan, and
Shannele Lopez all won in straight sets in singles.
Azusa Pacific is now 18-2 on the season, while Cal State LA drops to 3-13. The Cougars were a perfect 16-0 in the regular season against PacWest teams with seven of those wins being shutouts.
In doubles, the duo of freshmen and the duo of seniors were the two winners to take the first point of the match. With their 6-2 win at the No. 1 position,
Stina Larsson and Suviste improved to 15-2 this season in doubles matches.
Katherine Nguyen and Jordan won the other doubles match, 6-1, to finish the regular season a perfect 6-0 at the No. 3 slot as a team.
The Cougars carried that momentum into singles and won the first set on five of the six courts. Suviste wasted no time with her second 6-0, 6-0 win in a row. She has now won 25 games in a row going back to the match against Point Loma. She extends her lead in the PacWest with her 18
th singles win and now has a 10-match winning streak.
Jordan raced through her match, 6-1, 6-1 against Sarah Olmos at No. 2 singles. She has never dropped a set in her career against Cal State LA in either singles or doubles.
Lopez capped off the win, continuing her strong form with a 6-3, 6-0 victory to improve to 12-1 on the season. Between singles and doubles, she has won 13 sets in a row in which she has not lost more than three games in any completed set.
Larsson got a rematch against Sofia Pavlova, who defeated Larsson en route to finishing runner-up at the ITA Fall West Regional. Larsson dominated most of the match to 6-3, 5-0 lead, but Pavlova won the final two games to prevent Larsson from finishing before the match was clinched. Nguyen also led her match 6-1, 4-4, coming within a couple games of what would have been her 11th win this season.
The Cougars will travel to Surprise, Arizona, next week for the 24th edition of the PacWest Championships. The festivities begin with round of 16 matches on Wednesday morning, but the Cougars will receive a first-round bye. The All-PacWest team will be announced at the banquet Wednesday evening, and then, quarterfinal action will begin on Thursday at 9 a.m. as the Cougars look to get back to the championship match for the fifth year in a row.
