AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific men's tennis took on NCAA Division I Weber State with only two players from the opening day lineup in the singles lineup, but the Cougars still came within one set of the victory before ultimately falling 4-3 to the Wildcats on Friday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex in a weather-delayed match.
After dropping doubles the Cougars got on the board with a win by retirement for
Max Schmidhauser at No. 3 singles. Then
Christopher Marci earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to offset the Wildcats' two wins at No. 4 and 5 singles.
Soeren Grandke won his second set in a tiebreaker to keep the match alive. After having dropped the first set 7-5, he came back to win the second 7-6(5). That allowed
David James Brownlee enough time to finish his first set. After battling through a marathon first set, which he won 11-9 in the tiebreaker, Brownlee won the second set more quickly for a 7-6(9), 6-2 win.
That evened the overall score at 3-3, but the final set at No. 1 singles went to the Wildcats. San Diego native Tristan Sarap won the final set 6-1 to clinch the 4-3 victory.
The loss was just the second for the Cougars this season and both have come as 4-3 decisions against NCAA Division I opponents. The Wildcats improve to 7-5, while the Cougars drop to 9-2 on the season.
Monday's match against Hawai`i Pacific has been moved in anticipation of rain. The Cougars will now have their rematch of the PacWest Championship match against the Sharks on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
