AZUSA, Calif. – For the fourth time in a row, Azusa Pacific women's tennis swept a PacWest opponent, beating MSU Denver 4-0 in less than two hours on Tuesday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
Shannele Lopez set the tone for the win by winning her No. 6 singles match in under an hour, 6-1, 6-2.
Stina Larsson and
Karola Suviste then won almost simultaneously to clinch the victory with Larsson winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Suviste taking her match 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific is now 12-2 and remains undefeated against PacWest opponents. Meanwhile, the Roadrunners drop to 10-10 at the conclusion of their trip through Southern California.
In doubles, Larsson and Suviste won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles to improve to 5-0 at the top doubles spot. Then
Katherine Nguyen and PacWest Player of the Week
Julia Jordan won at No. 3 doubles by the same score to clinch the doubles point. Nguyen and Jordan are now 3-0 as a team in doubles.
Lopez extended her PacWest-leading mark of wins without a loss to seven with her win. Larsson and Suviste also extended their leads as the top-2 players on the PacWest leaderboard for most singles wins in the PacWest. Larsson has 13 and Suviste now has 12 as the two freshmen set the pace for the conference. Jane Steur from Colorado Mesa is tied with Suviste for second place.
In the unfinished matches, Nguyen and
Tina Moser both led by a set. At No. 1 singles, Jordan dropped the opening set but already led 3-0 in the second set when play was stopped.
The quick match might prove critical for the Cougars who will have to play again Wednesday on short rest at Biola. Azusa Pacific won the first meeting between the two rivals earlier this season, 4-2. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in La Mirada and the matches can be streamed for free.
