Cougars Erupt For Shutout Win

AZUSA, Calif. – After lying dormant for ten days due to two matches being canceled for rain, Azusa Pacific had a volcanic 7-0 win over visiting Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday evening at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex, winning all 14 sets in the contest.
 
The Cougars picked up where they left off 10 days ago, having beat Stanislaus State by the same score. No. 14 Azusa Pacific has now won 14 team points in a row and haven't lost a set in two weeks.
 
Azusa Pacific is now 10-2 and has won all eight matches against PacWest opponents this season. With the loss, the Vulcans to 2-6.
 
Julia Jordan earned the Cougars' win at No. 1 singles defeating a red-hot McKenna Mountain, who entered the match with a 6-1 record on the year. Mountain hadn't lost two completed sets all season, but Jordan dispatched her opponent 6-4, 6-3. Jordan has now won 14-consecutive sets against NCAA Division II opponents.
 
Tina Moser earned her third career love-and-love victory, winning at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0. She has already collected 10 bagels this season and has won all five of her matches at the No. 5 singles position.
 
Stina Larsson and Shannele Lopez also won sets at love against the Vulcans. Larsson won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Lopez won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Larsson leads the team in wins in singles with an 11-1 record, while Lopez remains undefeated on the season at 5-0.
 
Karola Suviste won her match 6-3, 6-1 for a milestone tenth career win in just her freshman season. Meanwhile, the Cougars' veteran Katherine Nguyen picked up her 54th career singles win, moving her into a tie for eighth most in program history.
 
In doubles, the freshman duo of Suviste and Larsson earned the win at the No. 1 slot, 6-3, clinching the doubles point after Jordan and Nguyen won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. As a team, the Cougars are 24-6 on the season for doubles.
 
The Cougars will be back on the courts on Thursday to host Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m. The team has a 9-0 all-time record against the Mavericks, dating back to the first meeting in 2012.
