Marching On

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific women's tennis took its undefeated start to the season into the month of March with a 4-2 win over Biola on Saturday morning at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex with Stina Larsson clinching the match with her second-consecutive three-set victory.

Larsson's win was what got the No. 18 Cougars across the finish line, putting an end to a furious comeback attempt by the Eagles. Julia Jordan and Karola Suviste both provided pivotal singles wins along the way with both winning in straight sets against Biola.

The Eagles dropped their No. 1 singles player Kailee Mazzeo into the No. 2 slot to try to slow down Jordan, who entered the weekend on a three-match win streak. However, Jordan wasn't deterred, putting together a dominant performance to win 6-2, 6-3. In her last eight sets, she has dropped a total of just 16 games.

Biola won at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, but the middle of the Cougars' lineup held firm. With a 3-2 lead, Katherine Nguyen and Larsson were each into a third set. Both players won the opening set but Biola came back at both courts to force a third set. It was a race to clinch the match and Larsson closed out her match first winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 against Dafne Andres at No. 3 singles.

Larsson's team-best eighth victory of the season clinched the Cougars' eighth win in a row to start the season. The 8-0 start passes the 2000 season as the second-best start to a season in program history. The Cougars are two wins away from the record set in 2004. Meanwhile, Biola drops to 4-3 in the 2025 season after having started the season with three 7-0 wins.

The Cougars opened the match by winning the doubles point. The first set win came from No. 3 doubles where the Cougars are undefeated on the season regardless of which team head coach Mark Bohren puts in that slot. This time it was Tina Moser and Shannele Lopez earning their third win as a team with a 6-2 victory.

Then Vini Bautista and Jordan showed why they are the No. 20 doubles team in the nation with a 6-4 win to clinch the first point of the match. Larsson and Suviste were tied at 4-all when their match was halted at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Jordan got the first win, improving to 6-1 on the season and making the overall score 2-0. Suviste then made the score 3-0 with her 6-0, 6-4 win over a veteran opponent in Alex Mann, racking up her sixth love set already this season.

Bautista, Larsson, and Nguyen all won their first set as well to put the Eagles in a significant hole. However, Isabelle Karam started what needed to be a massive comeback by taking No. 6 singles against Tina Moser, 6-3, 6-2. Biola was on the scoreboard, and suddenly Azusa Pacific faced a lot of pressure.

On each of the three remaining courts, Biola came back to win the second set a force a deciding third set, but the Eagles had to win all three. They got the first one with Isabella Chavarria earning a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Bautista at No. 1 singles. However, Larsson made sure the comeback didn't go any farther than that. She was dominant in her third set and put an end to the match by winning it 6-1.

Azusa Pacific will next play Pacific at 1:30 p.m. on Monday as the Cougars look to keep the season-opening streak going. They will also host Washburn on Wednesday with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m.
