Three Is a Magic Number

Cougars drain 17 three-pointers in rout of Chaminade.

AZUSA, Calif.The Cougars scored the first 21 points of the game and never looked back, earning a 91-55 victory over Chaminade Wednesday evening inside the Felix Event Center.  Lauren Jones led the way offensively, setting career highs in three-point shots made with 7 and points with 21.

How It Happened:  Audrey Sayoc gave the Cougars the lead for good just seven seconds into the game.  Jones would make her first three attempts of the evening, all from beyond the arc, as the Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead after just two and a half minutes.  In all, Azusa Pacific would score 21 unanswered in a game-opening run that spanned nearly six minutes, ultimately leading 28-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougar bench got more thoroughly into the action in the second quarter, with Calista Arzaga and Vanessa Parilla both adding to the Cougars' long-range barrage.  In all, 10 different Cougars scored in the first half as they stretched the lead to 51-23 at the half.  That would be followed by two more triples from Jones to start the second half as the lead eclipsed the 30-point mark for the first time.  And the lead would continue to grow in the fourth as the Cougar reserves continued to make their mark, pushing the advantage to as many as 38 in the final minutes.

By the Numbers:  Jones had a career-high 21 points on 7-11 shooting from beyond the arc.  As a team, the Cougars made a season-high 17 threes.  Rachel Roderick added 10 points and 6 rebounds, Sayoc had 7 assists to go with 7 points, while Parilla led the bench with 13 points and 7 rebounds.  In all, the Cougar bench combined for 45 points as all 12 players who got into the game for Azusa Pacific scored at least a point.  Meanwhile, the defense held Chaminade to 35.7% from the field and forced 31 turnovers, including 23 steals.

Up Next:  Back above .500 on the season, Azusa Pacific (5-4, 2-1 PacWest) will return to nonconference play on Thursday when they welcome Alaska-Fairbanks to the Felix Event Center for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.
