Azusa, Calif – Azusa Pacific handed Hawai'i Hilo its fourth straight loss in a dominant 66-47 win over the Vulcans.
Kelly Heimburger had 17 points in only 18 minutes of play.
How it Happened: The Cougars set the tone early, jumping to a 41-12 halftime lead behind a combined team effort, including bench points from
Elyse Mitchell,
Rachel Roderick, and
Sydney Hani. Hawai'i Hilo mounted a late push, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the large deficit.
The Cougars exploded offensively in the third quarter, where they saw a 41-point lead at one point, completely dominating the Vulcans. Heimburger led the way with 17 points and 5 rebounds, including 2 three-pointers.
Amayah Kirkman added 6 points, while Hani and
Rome Falcocchia chipped in 8 points apiece.
Hawai'i Hilo struggled offensively, shooting just 16-of-63 (.254) from the field, while the Cougars controlled the boards with a 45-39 rebounding edge and showcased a strong inside presence, scoring 38 points in the paint compared to the Vulcans' 20. Hawai'i Hilo's 18 turnovers led to 17 points for the Cougars, who also received 30 points from their bench.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (15-2 overall, 9-1 PacWest) will host Hawai'i Pacific on Monday, Jan. 20 at 5:15 p.m. This matchup comes just 11 days after the Sharks gave the Cougars a tough matchup in the Aloha State, though Azusa Pacific remained unscathed in conference play, winning 66-63.
