AZUSA, Calif. — In its first match of the season, Azusa Pacific soared to a dominant 3-0 win on its home court against Northwest Nazarene (25-16, 25-14, 25-21).
Playing their first game with the Cougars,
Anya Green led the team with 12 kills while
Delaney Tate posted 10 kills and four aces.
Kendyl MacAskill started her fourth season at Azusa Pacific with five blocks and seven kills while freshman
Brooklyn Kostoff accumulated 34 assists in the team's win.
How It Happened: To start their first set of the 2024 season, the Cougars scored four straight points and maintained the lead through the entirety of the set. Azusa Pacific led by eight or more points at three different times in the first set before rattling off a 25-16 win.
In the second set, neither team led by more than two points until halfway through the set. MacAskill tied the set 12-12 with a kill then the Cougars pieced together a 13-1 run to put the score at 22-13. Azusa Pacific gave the Nighthawks one point due to a service error then regained their momentum rattling off the last three points of the set to win 25-14.
In the final set of the match, the Cougars found themselves with a 20-12 lead before the Nighthawks generated some momentum to score eight straight points and tie the match at 20-20. However, Azusa Pacific remained in command and finished the match with three straight points including a powerful strike from Tate to end the set 25-21.

Anya Green kicked off the season with a .667 hitting percentage accumulating 12 kills in 18 attacks. The Cougars dominated on all spheres putting together 43 kills with only 10 errors and finished with a .282 hitting percentage. Meanwhile on the other side of the net, the Nighthawks posted only 30 kills with 13 errors and a .163 hitting percentage
