AZUSA, Calif. - On Wednesday afternoon, #13 Azusa Pacific improved to 18-0 on the season while also securing a regular season sweep of rival Biola. The Cougars beat the Eagles by a 4-3 score. Azusa Pacific is now 28-1 all-time against Biola.
The nation's 24th-ranked doubles duo of
Elias Emilio Walter and
Miha Velicki started things off for the Cougars with a 6-1 win at No. 1. Walter and Velicki are now 13-2 this season. While Biola won the No. 2 showdown,
Soeren Grandke and
Constantin Barth would come through at No. 3 with a point-clinching 6-4 win. Grandke and Barth are 10-0 together this season.
Barth would quickly put the Cougars ahead 2-0 overall to start singles, as he beat Patricio Larrea in straight-sets by a 6-1, 6-1 score at No. 5. With the win, Barth improves to 14-0 this season. Grandke would make it 3-0 overall for Azusa Pacific, as he beat Callen Hein at No. 4 by a 6-4, 6-1 tally, and he is now 16-2 this season.Â
Biola would capture its first point of the day with a straight-set win at No. 3, and then the Eagles would add another with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6. Any thoughts of a rare Eagles win in the Cornerstone Cup would be extinguished by Walter at No. 1, where he beat Nico Ramirez in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to clinch the match. As of the latest ITA national rankings, Walter was ranked 44th, while Ramirez was 27th. Walter is now 18-0 this season, with nine of those victories occurring in the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
The Eagles would add a third point by way of retirement at No. 2.
