SURPRISE, Ariz. - #2 seed Azusa Pacific is headed to the PacWest title match following a 4-0 victory over #3 Concordia. The Cougars will face #5 Academy of Art and have their eyes set on their third title in four years.
In doubles, the #3 ranked duo in the nation, Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor ran to a 6-1 win at No.1 before the Golden Eagles took the set at No.2. It all came down to Katherine Nguyen and Vini Bautista who won 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars.
Bautista opened singles with a bang, earning a straight set 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 to give Azusa Pacific a 2-0 lead. Lopez kept the momentum going with another straight set 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
It was #51 nationally ranked Tudor who closed it out for Azusa Pacific on No.4, winning in straight sets once again 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Cougars, sending them to the championship match of the PacWest tournament tomorrow. Although Kane's match on No.1 went unfinished, the #10 singles player in the country was leading her opponent 6-3, 5-4.
Azusa Pacific has put together its best season in program history, being 20-1 and they enter their fourth straight championship match at the conference tournament, as they have lifted the trophy two times in the past three years.
