SURPRISE, Ariz. - After a hard fight on Saturday, the Cougars fell to #5 seed Academy of Art 4-0 in the Championship match of the PacWest tournament at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club in Surprise, Arizona.
To start doubles play, Shannele Lopez and Katherine Nguyen fell 6-2 on No. 3, but #3 ranked Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor evened it up with a 7-5 victory at No. 1. On No. 2, Vini Bautista and Julia Jordan went to a tiebreak, losing a heartbreaker 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak). Academy of Art took the doubles point, leading the Cougars 1-0 heading into singles play.
The Urban Knights kept the momentum as Kane fell on No. 1 to Amelija Supulniece 7-5, 6-0, followed by another loss on No. 2 between Jordan and Jessica Plazas 6-4, 6-4.
The Cougars attempt to come back came to a halt when Academy of Art's Viktoria Leth took the match over Nguyen on No. 5, 6-3, 6-2, giving the Urban Knights the 4-0 victory. Despite the outcome, Tudor was leading (6-3, 5-4) on No. 4, while Bautista was in a third set on No. 3 (6-2, 7-6, 2-1) and Lopez was in her second set on No. 6, (6-4, 3-6).
The Cougars posted an incredible season with a 20-2 record with a 19 match winning streak. Head coach Mark Bohren has led Azusa Pacific to the best season in program history and although they did not get the automatic bid to the west regional with the victory today, the Cougars will await their regional seeding where they remain in a strong position for post season play.
