Worth the Wait

Azusa Pacific beat rival Biola by a 7-0 score on Thursday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. - #35 Azusa Pacific and Biola were originally scheduled to play on Wednesday of this week, however, rain in the forecast led to the match being moved to today. The wait proved to be no issue for the Cougars, as they dominated the Eagles for a 7-0 win. The Cougars, who were ranked No. 35 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, are now 8-1.

Despite Biola getting the first win of the day at doubles No. 3, Azusa Pacific took the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Vini Bautista and Julia Jordan got back to their winning ways at No. 2, as the duo won 7-5. Over at No. 1, Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor came through in the clutch for the Cougars, as they fought to a 7-6 tie break victory, winning the tiebreak in a commanding 7-1 fashion. Kane and Tudor are on a four-match winning streak together at No. 1.

Tudor claimed the first singles win of the match, beating Kailee Mazzeo at No. 3 by 6-1, 6-2 scores. Tudor, who ranked #32 nationally, has earned all six of her wins this season in straight-set fashion. Bautista followed up with a win at No. 4, beating Isabella Chavarria 6-3 in the first set, and then quickly winning 6-0 in the second.

Katherine Nguyen was the clincher for the Cougars on the day, as her 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 gave the Cougars the 4-0 lead they needed to secure the overall victory. Nguyen is currently on a four-match winning streak.

Shannele Lopez made it 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6, while Kane bounced back from a tiebreak defeat in the first set at No. 1 to Colbeyshae Emery, before responding with a 6-3 second-set and a leave-no-doubt 6-0 deciding set win. Kane has now won five sets by a 6-0 score this season.

Julia Jordan added the final pinch of salt in the wound for the Eagles, as she improved her streak of unbeaten matches to seven at No. 2, beating Lilly McNeill by a tally of 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

Azusa Pacific has now beaten Biola by a 7-0 score in three consecutive meetings, and the Cougars are 38-2 all-time in the rivalry.
