No Signs of Stopping Now

Azusa Pacific defeated Hawai’i Hilo 6-1 to win its 13th consecutive match on Wednesday.

AZUSA, Calif. – With a 6-1 win over Hawai'i Hilo on Wednesday, No. 20 Azusa Pacific improved its season record to 13-1. The victory also extends the Cougars' 12-match win streak over the Vulcans, dating back to 2013.

The day started with back-to-back wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles to provide the Cougars the first point of the match then Madison Kane, Shannele Lopez, Miruna Tudor, Vini Bautista, and Katherine Nguyen all won their singles matches to help lead the team to victory.

The No. 9 nationally ranked duo of Miruna Tudor and Madison Kane earned their tenth win of the season with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles to kick off the match. Bautista and Julia Jordan followed suit with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles to help secure the Cougars' first point of the day.

Moving onto singles, the Cougars carried the momentum from doubles to win three consecutive singles matches in straight sets and outright clinch the win over Hawai'i Hilo.

Kane started things off with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to improve her overall record to 13-1 this season. Kane, who is on a nine-match winning streak, is ranked No. 21 in the nation in singles.

Shannele Lopez has continued to deliver at No. 6 singles this time winning her match 6-4, 6-2 over the Vulcans' Hana Hofmanova, giving the Cougars their third point of the game. Lopez improved to a 12-2 record this season. winning the last five singles matches all in straight sets.

Securing the fourth point for the Cougars to outright clinch the match, Tudor earned a 6-2, 6-4 dominant win at No. 4 singles. Tudor is currently ranked No. 39 in the nation for her singles performance this season.

Playing out the rest of the matches, Bautista also earned a win (7-6(7-5), 2-6, 10-7) at No. 3 singles to improve the Cougars' lead to 5-0.

Although the Vulcans earned their sole point of the match at No. 2 singles, the Cougars finished the match strong with a win from Nguyen at No. 5 singles. Nguyen who improved to 11-3 this year in singles, won the first set in a tiebreak (7-1), then dropped the next set 3-6 before winning the third set in a super tie format (13-11).

Up Next: The Cougars will face off against Biola for round two of the Cornerstone Cup on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. This time, Azusa Pacific will host.
