AZUSA, Calif. - #20 Azusa Pacific won a battle of ranked opponents on Tuesday afternoon, defeating #30 Texas Permian Basin by a 4-0 score to improve to 12-0 on the season. Texas Permian Basin drops to 11-2 with the loss.
After forgoing doubles in yesterday's match, the Cougars had no trouble getting back into the swing of it this afternoon.
Soeren Grandke and
Constantin Barth improved to 6-0 at No. 3, where the duo earned a 6-3 victory.
Miha Velicki and
Elias Emilio Walter collected the doubles point for the Cougars, as their 6-2 win at No. 1 put Azusa Pacific ahead by a 1-0 score overall. Velicki and Walter are unbeaten in their last four and hold an 8-2 record.
Walter would put the Cougars ahead 2-0 to start singles, as he earned a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Walter is 12-0 thus far, winning six matches at No. 1 and seven at No. 2, and he was just named the PacWest Player of the Week earlier this afternoon. Walter has held his opponents to two or fewer games won in 13 sets this season. Barth also remained unbeaten on the season, as he earned a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 for the Cougars. Barth is 10-0 this season, and he has won all but one of those matches in straight sets.
Grandke put the finishing touches on the afternoon for the Cougars, as he clinched the match at No. 3, where he opened with a 6-2 first set and then closed it out with a 6-4 win in the second set. Grandke is currently on a 12-match winning streak, and he has won seven during that streak in straight-sets.
