Good Start to the Week

#35 Azusa Pacific women’s tennis defeated Academy of Art 5-2 today at the Munson & Bavougian Tennix Complex

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific started the week off strong with a 5-2 victory over conference opponent Academy of Art. The Cougars won the doubles point before taking four out of the six singles matches. 

Katherine Nguyen and Shannele Lopez won their doubles set 6-2 before Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor eventually fell 6-3 on No. 1. It all came down to No. 2 where Julia Jordan and Vini Bautista clinched the doubles point 6-4 to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. 

Academy of Art won on No. 3 to tie the match at 1-1 before Lopez won in straight sets on No. 6 6-3, 6-2 to take a 2-1 advantage over the Urban Knights. 

Kane then bounced back, winning her match on No. 1 in straight sets 7-6 (7-5 tiebreak), 6-3. The Urban Knights took another point from the Cougars on No. 5 to cut Azusa Pacific's lead to 3-2. 

Tudor and Jordan closed out the day as Tudor won in straight sets 7-6 (7-2 tiebreak), 6-2 on No. 4 and Jordan captured a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory on No. 2. The Cougars defeated the Urban Knights by a final score of 5-2. 

By the Numbers: Kane and Tudor are ranked #8 in the nation in doubles as they currently hold an 8-2 record. Tudor (#32) and (#75) are both nationally ranked in singles as well, while Kane is currently 9-1 on singles No. 1, holding a five match win streak and Tudor is 8-3. Jordan also has an eight-match win streak with an 8-1 record at singles No. 2. This is the third consecutive match that Azusa Pacific has won over Academy of Art and the Cougars are currently 10-1 on the season. 

Up Next: The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow when they host Texas Permain Basin at 3:30 p.m.
