POMONA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific dropped both games of a Friday doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona. The Cougars are now 1-5 to start the season.
GAME ONE: Cal Poly Pomona 4, Azusa Pacific 3
It was a pitching dual through five innings, with both starting pitchers exiting after working five scoreless innings. The Cougars started
Isaac Mendez, who went five innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out six batters faced.Â
After a scoreless top half of the sixth inning for the Cougars, the Broncos finally broke through in the bottom half of the frame, hitting a three-run home run with two outs.
The Cougars answered right back in the seventh inning, bringing three runs across to tie it at 3-3.
Jeffrey Castillo led off the inning with a single, and he was promptly brought home on a
Carson Collett double. With one out in the inning,
Will Medina scored

George Christison, who singled earlier in the inning, was the game-tying run for the Cougars, as he was driven in off of an RBI single from
Spencer Rasmussen.
After scoreless frames in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth, Cal Poly Pomona regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out solo home run.
Azusa Pacific was retired in order in the ninth to finish the game.
GAME TWO: Cal Poly Pomona 10, Azusa Pacific 2
The Broncos secured their second win of the day by scoring in four consecutive innings. The Broncos put up a three spot in the fourth, five runs in the sixth, and one run in both the fifth and seventh innings. Trailing 10-0 heading into the top of the ninth, the Cougars scored both of their runs in the inning.
Bradley Taylor was called upon as a pinch hitter, and he responded with a two RBI double in just his second plate appearance of the season.
Cal Poly Pomona's starter, Noel Soto, went six scoreless innings.
Grayson Gifford made his first appearance of the season for the Cougars, pitching a scoreless bottom of the eighth and striking out of the four hitters he faced.Â
Up Next: The Cougars can still salvage a split on the weekend, with the two teams set to square off in a doubleheader in Azusa tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
