Right to Work On A Monday Morning

Azusa Pacific beat Westmont by a 7-0 score on Monday in Santa Barbara.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific wasted no time on Monday morning at Westmont, rolling to a 7-0 win over the Warriors. After quickly capturing the doubles point, the Cougars won all six singles matchups in straight-sets to secure the sweep and improve to 2-1 on the season.

Julia Jordan and Vini Bautista opened the morning with a 6-2 win in the No. 2 doubles match, while the Cougars' No. 1 partnership of Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor won 6-3 to secure the opening point of the match.

Kane followed up the doubles win with a display of sheer dominance in singles, as she not only knocked off Westmont's Francesca Aguirre in straight-sets at No. 1, but Kane won all 12 games played for a 6-0, 6-0 win. It was the fifth time in Kane's career in which she has claimed a single win in 6-0, 6-0 fashion, and its her first time doing so at No. 1 in the Azusa Pacific lineup.

At No. 2, Julia Jordan opened with a 6-1 first set, and she then secured her first singles win as a Cougar with a 6-3 second set victory. Vini Bautista delivered another win for the Cougars at No. 3, where she won 6-1, 6-4. Miruna Tudor at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2), Katherine Nguyen at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1) and Shannele Lopez at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2) rounded out the victories for the visitors. Nguyen is 3-0 to start the season, with all three victories coming at No. 5.

Azusa Pacific has won 23 consecutive matches against Westmont, dating back to the 2003 season. During the course of those 23 wins, the Cougars have shut out the Warriors 10 times. Today's match marked the first time since 2012 in which the two teams took to the courts as members of the same conference, as the two schools were former rivals in the NAIA as members of the GSAC before the Cougars left for the NCAA in 2013. This year, Westmont has joined the Division II ranks in the PacWest Conference.

Up Next: The Cougars are back home on Wednesday (Feb. 14), as they will host Cal State Los Angeles at 2:30 pm. There is no better way to spend a Valentine's Day than a couple of hours out at the tennis courts, so find yourself a date and bring them out to the match on Wednesday before dinner!
