AZUSA, Calif. – Despite trailing at halftime, Azusa Pacific rallied to find a goal just ten minutes into the second half, earning a draw versus No. 15 Point Loma on Wednesday night.
The 1-1 draw snapped the Sea Lions' perfect 4-0 start in conference play and gave the Cougars their first tie of the season.
Head coach
Dave Blomquist shared his thoughts following the draw: "Really good game. In some ways, our best performance of the season and we knew we had to play really well and step up to play against Point Loma…they had chances to win and we had chances to win but overall, I'm really proud of the guys and how they performed their best this year."
How it Happened: Coming off a 2-1 victory over another national contender, Westmont, Azusa Pacific knew it had to maintain that momentum and play even cleaner against No. 15 Point Loma.
Blomquist said later that the strategy in the first half was to focus on communication within the defense. Although the back line shut out the Sea Lions for most of the match, a perfectly placed long ball to Point Loma's Zach Mercieca caught the Cougars off guard as he sealed the first goal of the match.
The Cougars came out in the second half with more pressure, focusing on limiting the time that Point Loma controlled the ball. And in doing so, they created more attacks on offense including one capped off by a goal from
Luis Solis in the 56th minute.
Solis' equalizer came from a free kick after he drew a foul just outside the goal box. He perfectly sent the ball into the top right corner, to earn his third goal of the season.
Both teams had strong chances to earn the advantage for the remainder of the game but the game resulted in a 1-1 draw, snapping the Sea Lions' five-game winning streak.
By the Numbers: While the Cougars trailed 7-4 in shots over the course of the first half, they outshot the Sea Lions 6-2 in the second half while capturing the game-tying goal. The tie also snapped the Cougars three-game losing streak to the Sea Lions to improve their all-time record to 39-12-7 against Point Loma.
Up Next: The Cougars will return to action with another home game in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader. Azusa Pacific will host Vanguard with the Men's game slated for 5:00 pm and the Women's game to follow at 7:30 pm.
