ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Four different Cougars combined for six goals in Azusa Pacific's 6-3 victory over Sonoma State on Thursday. Aubrey Dunaway and Bethany Tee both earned a brace, scoring their first two goals of the season, while Alexis Fuller and Angela Cipriano each put one in the back of the net. The Cougars also had five assists in the game, with Avery Guiel and Katie Prado each having two.Â
"After Sonoma State hit a banger of a free kick to start the second half and find ourselves down for the first time, we responded with four unanswered goals!" said head coach Brooke Lincoln. "That's the response you are looking for from your players. We wanted to make a statement today after the Cal Poly loss, and a statement is what we made!"Â
How it Happened: Azusa Pacific's offensive attack began quickly, when Alexis Fuller capitalized on a ball sent from Katie Prado to nail in a shot just outside the top of the box to give the Cougars a quick 1-0 advantage in the fourth minute. The Seawolves responded just seven minutes later, finding the equalizer to notch the game at one a piece.Â
In the 20th minute, Avery Guiel sent a low cross into the box, setting up Tee to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Sonoma State once again responded nine minutes later, tying the game at 2-2, which was the score after the first 45 minutes of regulation.
In the second half, the Seawolves took advantage of a set piece early, gaining a 3-2 lead over Azusa Pacific. The Cougars continued to press on their attacking half and eventually found the equalizer, which was the first of four unanswered goals that the Cougars would score in the final 23 minutes of the match. Kylie Carwitz sent a ball up field that found Guiel on the left side of the box, Guiel sent a cross into Dunaway who found the back of the net, tying the game at 3-3.
Just three minutes later, it was Cipriano who sent a ball past the diving Seawolves goalkeeper at the top of the box, giving Azusa Pacific a 4-3 advantage. The Cougars continued to extend their lead when Prado found the ball and sent a cross in to Tee who was crashing on the far side of the pitch, sending the ball to the top of the net, widening Azusa Pacific's lead to 5-3.
The Cougars rounded out the scoring fest when Madison Woodward took advantage of a throw-in on their attacking half, setting up Dunaway perfectly with a breakaway on the right side of the box, scoring her second goal of the match. 6-3 was the final score in Rohnert Park, as the Cougars earned a dominant win over a strong CCAA opponent in Sonoma State.
By the Numbers: It is the first time in Azusa Pacific's NCAA Division II era that the Cougars have scored at least six goals or more in a non-conference match. Azusa Pacific led in every category, collecting 16 shots, nine shots on goal and six corner kicks. Lincoln utilized 19 different players in today's match, while five different Cougars now have at least one goal on the season.
