HAYWARD, Calif. - Azusa Pacific women's soccer fell to Cal State East Bay on the road by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. This is the Cougars first loss on the road this season and the loss moves their overall record to 2-2.  Aubrey Dunaway, Alexis Salazar and Bethany Tee all acquired a shot on goal in the match.
How it Happened: Cal State East Bay started strong, taking a lead in the 10th minute. The Pioneers found the ball in the box, moving past the Cougar defenders and nailed in a shot between the posts to take an early 1-0 lead.Â
Azusa Pacific responded just eight minutes later when about 25 yards out, the ball found Aubrey Dunaway who sent in a shot that banged off the crossbar. The ball fell right to Tee, who collected a header goal to tie the game at one a piece.Â
The Cougars had an opportunity to take the lead in the 25th minute when the ball met Tee on the right side of the box, but her shot missed just high, and 1-1 was the score heading into the second half.Â
Cal State East Bay jumped ahead early in the second half, taking its second lead of the game from a low cross into the box to set up a Pioneer player that got it past the diving Maddie Williams to grab a 2-1 lead over Azusa Pacific.
In the final minutes, Azusa Pacific saw an opportunity to tie it when an offensive press up field found two Cougars, but the Pioneer goalie made a timely stop, halting the attack near the net. Cal State East Bay maintained that lead over the Cougars for the remainder of the game, as Azusa Pacific dropped their first road contest of the 2023 season by a 2-1 final.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific will return to the Cougar Soccer Complex on Thursday, September 14th when the Cougars face Chico State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and if you cannot attend, you can watch HERE.Â
