FRESNO, Calif. - No. 18 Azusa Pacific closed out its regular season on Friday at Fresno Pacific, and the Cougars won their 10th-consecutive match, shutting out the Sunbirds by a 7-0 score. Azusa Pacific went 19-4 over the regular season, winning 11 matches in shutout fashion.
To open the action, the nation's fifth-ranked doubles team of
Eleonora Liga and
Madison Kane made quick work of Lea Falentin and Audrey Ouellet, winning 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Liga and Kane are 20-2 this season, and the pair have beaten their opponents by a 6-0 score on four occasions.
Miruna Tudor and
Vini Bautista clinched the doubles point for the Cougars by way of a 6-2 defeat of Nayuma Subba and Elise Leik at No. 2. Tudor and Bautista are now 6-0 this season.
Liga opened up singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Falentin at No. 1. Liga is now 20-1 this season, and the nation's #8 singles player, has won six sets this season by a 6-0 score, and 17 of her victories have been won in straight sets.
Vini Bautista put the Cougars up 3-0, as she beat Leik 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Bautista is 7-2 at No. 4 this season, with all seven of those wins coming in straight sets.
Madison Kane's straight-set win at No. 2 served as the match-clinching point, as she beat Sanne Brull 6-3, 6-2. The victory was Kane's 12 of the season, and 11 of those wins have occurred in straight-set fashion.
April Wong (No. 3),
Katia Betancourt (No. 6) and
Katherine Nguyen (No. 5) closed out the Cougars' sweep with straight-set sweeps in their matchups. Wong won over Ouellet by a 6-2, 7-5 tally, Betancourt defeated Margarita Munoz 6-2, 6-2, and Nguyen wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Daimy Paula. Betancourt is a perfect 5-0 this season.
