SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Cougars are headed back to the semifinals of the PacWest Championships, following a 4-0 shutout of No. 10-seed Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday morning. It was the third time that the two teams played this season, and the Cougars were the victors in all three meetings.Â
The Cougars opened the match by quickly securing the doubles point, with a 6-1 win at No. 1 by
Eleonora Liga and
Madison Kane (ranked #6 nationally), and a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 match by
April Wong and
Shannele Lopez. Liga and Kane have now won their last 11 matches together, and they are 20-2 at No. 1 on the season.
Azusa Pacific was just as dominant in singles, earning the three wins necessary to clinch the match in straight-set fashion.
Madison Kane provided the highlight of the afternoon, as she won 12 consecutive games at No. 2 to quickly dispatch of Julia Braden by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Kane has now won eight sets this season by a 6-0 tally.
Eleonora Liga put the Cougars ahead 3-0 overall, beating Akari Ichikawa 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1. Liga, ranked #11 in the national rankings, is 21-1 this season, and she has earned 17 victories in straight-set fashion.Â
Katherine Nguyen provided the final point to send the Cougars through to the semifinals, as she won at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1) over Casydee De Mattos. Nguyen is 18-2 this season, with all but one of her victories occurring in just two sets.Â
Up Next: The second-seed Cougars will not face No. 3 seed Concordia (15-2) in the semifinals tomorrow at 9:00 am. During the regular season, Azusa Pacific won both meetings between the two teams. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a 4-0 defeat of Academy of Art in their quarterfinal match this morning.
