LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 18 Azusa Pacific won its eighth-consecutive match on Wednesday, as the Cougars traveled to Cal State Los Angeles and earned a 6-1 victory. Azusa Pacific is now 18-4 overall.
The Cougars' No. 1 & No. 2 doubles duos started the match off by securing Azusa Pacific the doubles point. At No. 1,
Madison Kane and
Eleonora Liga, ranked No. 5 nationally, beat Sarah Olmos and Sakura Kurokawa by a 6-2 score. Kane and Liga are now 19-2 together at No. 1. Over in the No. 2 matchup,
Miruna Tudor and
Vini Bautista improved to 5-0 together, as the duo clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Alexandra Hincu and Hideka Takamura.
Azusa Pacific maintained the momentum in singles, as the Cougars won five of the six matches in straight-set fashion.
April Wong earned the first win, as she picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Kurokawa. Wong is unbeaten over her last seven matches played. At No. 1, it was business as usual for Liga, as she extended her unbeaten streak to 18 matches with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Olmos. Liga is ranked as the nation's #8 singles player, holding a 19-1 record.
Shannele Lopez, who was in the singles lineup for the third time this season, stepped up as the match-clincher for the Cougars at No. 6. Lopez beat Savaughna Mayo in the first set 6-4, and then sealed the deal with a 6-2 win. Lopez has now won her last two singles matches in straight-sets.
Katherine Nguyen put the Cougars up 5-0 with her 13th straight-set win of the season, as she beat Courtlyn Lam at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2).
Miruna Tudor, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, is now on a 19-match unbeaten streak, as she won the No. 4 dual against Alexandra Hincu (6-1, 6-1).
The Golden Eagles' lone win was a three-set battle at No. 3, where Takamura hung on for a super tiebreak win over Bautista.
