AZUSA, Calif. –
Miruna Tudor outlasted her opponents in both singles and doubles, clinching the doubles point and then the match to lead Azusa Pacific to a 4-3 win over Point Loma on Saturday afternoon.
Point Loma was serving for the doubles point with a 6-5 lead at No. 2 doubles, but Azusa Pacific's duo of
Vini Bautista and Tudor broke back to force a tiebreaker. It was the second time in the set, and not the last time, that the Cougars had to come from behind. The Cougars' No. 2 team then saved two set points in the tiebreaker, including one long rally that ended with Tudor deftly hitting an inside-out forehand drop volley to stay alive in the set. They went on to win the tiebreaker 9-7 to win the doubles point for Azusa Pacific.
From there, Azusa Pacific got quick singles wins from
Eleonora Liga and
April Wong to take a 3-0 lead, but Point Loma fought back to even the match 3-3. That left only Tudor on court in singles well after all of the other matches were complete. She won a marathon opening set, but dropped the second set. With all of the attention on No. 5 singles, Tudor took the deciding set for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Amanda Letzring in over two and a half hours.
The No. 19 Cougars are now 17-4 on the season, while Point Loma drops to 11-5. The Sea Lions were ranked fourth in the conference in the PacWest's first rankings with two of their three losses to NCAA Division II teams this year coming at the hands of the Cougars.
Azusa Pacific's No. 1 doubles team of Liga and
Madison Kane won their set 6-4 to start the match. They now have an 18-2 record as a team at the No. 1 position, making them a lock for first-team All-PacWest honors for doubles. Point Loma came back to win at No. 3 doubles and led by a break at No. 2 doubles twice before the Cougars' impressive comeback. Bautista and Tudor are now 4-0 when playing together.
Liga also won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 against Arianna Audelo, who was a second-team All-PacWest selection as a freshman last year. The Cougars extended the lead to 3-0 with Wong's 6-3, 6-3 win over Point Loma's former No. 1 Angelique Friedrich. Wong now has 64 career singles wins for the Cougars, moving to within seven of Azusa Pacific's all-time record set by Bay Daniels in 2008.
Azusa Pacific was within one point of clinching, but Point Loma made it a little tougher with wins at Nos. 2, 4, and 6 singles. Joelle Lanz defeated
Madison Kane, while Thelma Sepulveda won against
Vini Bautista and
Katherine Nguyen faced just her second loss of the season against Rachel Whittington.
Apart from Tudor's three-set battle, the other five matches were wrapped up quickly, and Tudor carried the weight of the match on her shoulders. She came through for her 15
th win in 16 matches this year. The second set she lost was only the third set she has lost all year after the season-opener, going on a 15-match winning streak. That is the second-longest winning streak in the PacWest, trailing only her teammate Liga, who has won 16 in a row with her win over Audelo.
The Cougars will play twice more this regular season, facing Cal State LA on Wednesday and Fresno Pacific on Friday. The next set of PacWest rankings will be released on Wednesday with the Cougars expected to remain at the No. 2 spot behind only Hawai`i Pacific.
