7-Up

Azusa Pacific beat Colorado Mesa 7-0 on Saturday in Azusa.

AZUSA, Calif. – No. 15 Azusa Pacific took care of business on its home courts on Saturday, shutting out Colorado Mesa 7-0. The Cougars improved to 8-2 overall.

April Wong and Miruna Tudor picked up the first win of the day for the Cougars, winning the No. 2 doubles match by a 6-1 score. Wong and Tudor have now won four of their last five matches together. The Mavericks would level the doubles score at No. 2, winning 6-1, which left the No. 1 dual as the deciding match. Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane (No. 3 nationally) stepped up once again for Azusa Pacific, winning 6-2 to give the Cougars the overall 1-0 advantage. Liga and Kane are now on a seven match winning streak, and they have only allowed opponents to win more than two games twice in that span.

The Cougars would win the match behind three consecutive singles victories. Liga (ranked No. 5 nationally) beat Makenna Livingston at No. 1 in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), which improves her singles record to 9-1 this season. At No. 4, Miruna Tudor battled to a 6-4 first set win, before she took full control in the second set, winning six consecutive games to put Azusa Pacific up 2-0. Tudor has extended her winning streak to nine matches. Wong, ranked No. 34 nationally, delivered the match-clinching point, as she won 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 3, Vini Bautista dropped the first set 5-7, but she responded with a 6-4 second set win to force a super tie break. In the super tie break, Bautista completed the comeback, winning 10-6.

Katherine Nguyen, who entered the day with a 22-match unbeaten streak, delivered yet again for the Cougars, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Nguyen is 9-0 this season, and she has won all nine matches in straight sets and has not allowed an opponent to win more than three games in a set.

Katia Betancourt was in the lineup for the third time this year, playing at No. 6. Betancourt fell by a 4-6 score in the first set, and then bounced back in the second for a 6-3 win to send the match to a super tie break. Betancourt would emerge from the tie break with a 10-4 victory to secure the match win and the Cougars' seventh point of the day.
