Shutout Victory in Home Finale

No. 19 Azusa Pacific beat No. 40 Concordia by a 7-0 score in the Cougars' home finale of 2023.

AZUSA, Calif. – Three Cougars played the final home match of their careers, as seniors Eleonora Liga, April Wong, and Katia Betancourt walked away from the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex with a 7-0 win over Concordia. No. 19 Azusa Pacific is now 16-4 this season, while the No. 40 Golden Eagles are 11-2, with both losses this season coming at the hands of the Cougars.

Ranked as the #6 doubles team in the country, Liga and Madison Kane got things started for the Cougars with a 6-3 win over Heather Richards and Sophie Rachor at No. 1. Liga and Kane have now won their last nine matches, and no opponent has won more than three games against the duo.

The Golden Eagles drew even in doubles with a win at No. 3, leaving the No. 2 dual as the point-deciding match. Miruna Tudor and Vini Bautista represented Azusa Pacific, while they battled Concordia's Tiffany Carrillo and Jessica Bear. It was a battle indeed, as the two teams exchanged momentum throughout the first 12 games, eventually drawing to a 6-6 set tie to force a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Tudor and Bautista took control, as they found themselves down in an early 2-1 hole, but would go on to take the next six points unanswered to grab the victory and put Azusa Pacific ahead 1-0 overall.

It did not take long for the Cougars to take a 2-0 match lead, as Bautista claimed a straight-set win at No. 4 in just about 40 minutes, as she beat Bear by 6-0, 6-1 set scores. Bautista is now unbeaten over her last seven matches, and she has claimed a 6-0 set win in each of her last three wins.

Over in the No. 1 match, Liga beat Richards by a 6-4 score in the first set, and then followed with a 6-2 second set triumph to extend her unbeaten streak to 16 matches, during which she has won 13 in straight-set fashion. Liga is the nation's fourth-ranked singles player, and she holds a 17-1 record.

Tudor came through as the Cougars' match-clincher at No. 5, where she defeated Alyssa Zayat by an identical 6-3 tally in back-to-back sets. Tudor is unbeaten over her last 17 matches, and she has claimed her last seven victories by way of straight-set wins.

Azusa Pacific secured the match-sweep by way of gritty three-set wins at No. 6, No. 2 and No. 3.

At No. 6, Katherine Nguyen fell by a 2-6 score in the first set, but she responded with a 6-3 victory in the second set. With the match already clinched when Nguyen and Alicia Da Re headed to the third, the two players played a super tie break, in which Nguyen claimed a 10-7 win to secure the victory. Nguyen is now 15-1 overall, with an 11-1 mark at No. 6.

Kane lost 5-7 in the first set to Rachor at No. 2, but she drew even in the second set with a dominant 6-1 win to force a third and decisive frame. Kane would secure the hard-fought victory in the third set, as she won 7-5 to increase her unbeaten match-streak to seven.

Wong closed out her home career in fitting fashion, as she won the 46th match of her career by a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 score. Wong is currently just four singles wins shy of moving into the top-10 in Azusa Pacific program history.

Up Next: On Saturday, the Cougars will travel down south to San Diego for a match against Point Loma, which will start at 3:00 pm. It will be the two team's second meeting of the season, as the Cougars earned a 6-1 win in Azusa back in mid-February.
