SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - A busy weekend for Azusa Pacific track & field got started on Thursday, as the Cougars sent a group of distance runners to the Mike Fanelli Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State.
In the men's 10K, two Cougars ran their way onto the provisional qualifying list.
Salvador Capetillo, who ran the event for the first time in his Azusa Pacific career, was the fastest Non-Division I runner and placed second overall, as he ran a personal-best time of 30:06.95. Currently, his time ranks No. 17 nationally, and it is the sixth-fastest time in program history. Capetillo is currently ranked in the top-20 nationally for two events, as he is No. 13 in the 5K (14:29.94).
Moises Marquez finished fourth in the 10K, as he put up a career-best time of 30:12.16, which met the provisional standard and put him right behind Capetillo on the national list at No. 18, and on the program list at No. 8.Â
"Salvador and Moises raced great tonight," said distance coach Sean Smith, "They closed very hard. I think there is a lot more in the tank."
Josh Velasco nearly joined Capetillo and Marquez with a provisional time of his own, as he placed eighth with a time of 30:30.33, which was less than two seconds off of the provisional time of 30:28.78. Velasco is now ranked 22nd nationally.
On the women's side in the 10K,
Justine Stecko ran a career-best time of 37:18.06, which is the 18th-fastest time in the country entering this weekend.Â
